Police on Monday morning unleashed new anti-riot gear outside the Anniversary Towers which houses the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in readiness for protests by the Opposition.
The fully armed officers deployed along University Way, brought with them several water cannons and trained dogs, ready to take on CORD leaders and their supporters in case the protests turned violent.
Nairobi Police boss Japheth Koome revealed to journalists that they had received credible information that a section of the protestors were armed with lethal weapons.
According to Koome, some of the youth who had arrived at the Towers were intoxicated and assured that his officers were ready to deal with any acts of violence.
Elsewhere, in Kisumu County residents led by Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga heeded to the calls and took to the streets to urge the disbandment of the Electoral body.
The Opposition had pleaded with its supporters countrywide to turn up in large numbers at all IEBC offices as pressure mounts for the Commissioners to quit office.
CORD leader Raila Odinga indicated that the coalition would boycott the 2017 elections if the officials would still be charged with the task of overseeing the polls.
