Traffic in Nairobi County was on Monday disrupted after a section of CORD protesters turned violent, stoning vehicles along selected streets.

On Juja Road, a bus plying the route was set on fire by rowdy demonstrators who caused a commotion in the area.

Most residents of Mathare were forced to walk home as a huge crowd converged to get a glimpse of the incident which happened near the Moi Airbase. Military officers intervened and helped arrest the situation.

Though the demonstrations in the city were largely peaceful, some protesters turned on road users using the busy Thika Superhighway.

Several vehicles were reportedly destroyed as the rioters hurled stones near Utalii College, forcing some motorists to use different inlets to access the Central Business District.

CORD supporters led by Raila Odinga protested in the CBD as police officers watched from a distance ensuring that the action remained peaceful.

Earlier on, Embakasi South legislator Mohamed Sumra met a group of youth at Uhuru Park where he pleaded with them to restrain from using stones, blocking roads or hitting vehicles during the protests.

Mr Sumra disclosed that the leaders had met and decided to maintain peace to avoid getting into trouble with the authorities.

However, the situation turned chaotic in Kisumu after protesters tried to loot supermarkets forcing police officers to intervene.

In the ensuing melee, one person was shot dead while close to 20 others were admitted to different hospitals around the lakeside city with bullet wounds.
