PHOTOS: Nairobi University Students Riot Over Babu Owino Re-election

University of Nairobi students on Saturday took to the streets protesting the re-election of Paul Ongili, commonly known as Babu Owino, as chairman of the students' body.

The learners engaged police in running battles along the busy Uhuru Highway and University Way bringing traffic to a stand still.

The rowdy students stoned motorists as they protested Friday's disputed elections and subsequent swearing in of Babu to head the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU).

They shouted 'Babu must go' slogans displaying their discontentment in the announcement.

Signs of violence emerged after videos showing Mr Babu assaulting his closest rival, Mike Jacobs, were circulated on social media a few days prior to the polls.

In a separate incident, Babu was also seen dishing out money to students as an incentive to vote for him.

Babu's re-election marks his fourth year as students' president, having served in that position twice while studying Acturial Science before enrolling as new student of Laws.
