PHOTOS: Unsafe Huruma Buildings Demolished

The National Construction Authority has begun demolishing unsafe buildings in Nairobi, in a bid to avert tragic incidents as witnessed in Huruma building collapse.

The exercise kicked off Friday morning with five high-risk buildings in Huruma estate being brought down as promised on Thursday.

Government officials have been helping occupants move following a demolition notice by NCA targeting 70 buildings.

Huruma ranks high in the list of houses to be brought down followed by Zimmerman as announced by NCA Chief Executive Daniel Manduku.

204 houses are also expected to be demolished in other Nairobi residential areas including: Dagoretti, Umoja, Thika road and South B.

According to the construction authority, Nairobi will be the first county to be targeted, but a countrywide inspection of buildings will kick off on May 10.

An awareness exercise on building safety will also be offered during the inspection.

The stringent measures come in the wake of the Huruma building collapse that has so far claimed the lives of 43people with over 70 still missing. The ill-fated building that had already been earmarked as unsafe crumbled last Friday amid heavy downpour in Nairobi.
