Police Ban Jubilee's Sunday Rally in Mombasa

Police have banned a Jubilee rally which was set to be held on Sunday in Mvita constituency, Mombasa County.

According to area County Commander Paterson Maelo, the authorities had not been notified about the event which was organised by Jubilee leaders led by gubernatorial aspirant Suleiman Shahbal.

Maelo, however, issued a go-ahead to a similar rally organised by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at the Tononoka Grounds on the same day.

"We cannot allow Jubilee to hold a meeting on Sunday at Mvita. We are only aware of the ODM rally. Any other gathering will be treated as illegal," he declared.

A political showdown was looming after both ODM and Jubilee declared they would hold the meeting at the venues which are approximately four kilometres apart.

On Friday, both groups inspected their respective venues with Governor Hassan Joho making public a police notice giving the ODM rally the green light.

Speaking to the press, Joho urged the officers to provide adequate security to ODM supporters and not disrupt the meeting as had been witnessed a day earlier in Kwale county.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Raila Odinga has arrived in the Coastal town in preparation for the Sunday event which he will address.

During the rally, Coastal leaders are set to make a major declaration regarding their political future ahead of the August 8 General Election.
