Police Ban Use of Private Security Guards in Nyanza

The government has banned the hiring of private security officers to guard politicians during campaign rallies in Nyanza.

Area police boss Joseph Keitany said politicians would not be allowed to use these guards noting that they should inform the authorities for security to be provided.

The Assistant Inspector General observed that only police officers were allowed to provide security during the public rallies.

Speaking a day after chaotic scenes in which Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's bodyguard was shot in Migori, the police chief warned politicians against using the private guards to cause fracas during meetings.

Keitany further cautioned leaders against hiring armed youth to political rallies ahead of the upcoming party primaries.

“We are keenly monitoring the situation ahead of the nominations and want to warn politicians against using the 'men in black' to cause chaos. They must notify the police on their planned rallies in accordance with the law,” he the Nation.

On Monday, a rally that was to be addressed by ODM leaders led by Joho was disrupted following a clash between two rival groups in the County.

Bodyguards were forced to fire severally in the air to disperse the groups as they struggled to evacuate the ODM leaders to safety.

In the ensuing melee, Joho's vehicle is said to have been shot at thrice with his aide escaping with a bullet wound.
