Police Officers Arrested in Evil Spirits Scandal

Police in Kanduyi constituency in Bungoma County have arrested two of their colleagues who were in a gang of five trying to abduct a woman under the guise of exorcising demons from her.

The two officers stationed at Ruai in Nairobi reportedly arrived in Sikata village on Saturday wearing priest robes and capes, claiming to have been sent from the city to set the village free from evil spirits.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma South Deputy OCS Isaack Kasembeli narrated how the five men picked on a specific woman claiming that she was practising witchcraft.

"The men went to her house and found a pot with grass and other things they claimed was paraphernalia. They then demanded that the woman should go with them to Nairobi so that the spirits can be driven away," said Mr Kasembeli.

The suspects are said to have caused panic and suspicion among residents who doubted their motive hence blocked the woman from leaving with them.

After calling the police, the men were discovered to be part of a gang that had been terrorizing people in the area. After a keen search, they were found with two pistols and handcuffs.

"This men are believed to be behind a gang that is terrorizing this community. We will deal with them accordingly," confirmed the police boss.

This comes barely two weeks after a 12-year old girl suffered serious facial burns when clerics of a Nakuru church tried to drive out spirits from her using kerosene.

Caroline Awuor was sprinkled with the flammable fluid by preachers from Mowar Israel church, who then surrounded her with lit candle to dispel evil spirits which had allegedly caused her illness.

One of the 'men of God' accidentally spat kerosene towards her leading to the incident.
