Police Reveal Number of Al Shabaab Returnees

Following the amnesty offered by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery in April this year, for Kenyans who had joined the Al Shabaab terror group, police have now revealed that over 200 recruits heeded the call.

Police Spokesperson Charles Owino, said on Wednesday that a number of parents had also been helping them in the fight against radicalisation of their children.

Owino added that they had received some of the boys and girls from Isiolo Boys and Marsabit Mixed schools who had crossed over to Somalia in April last year.

β€œIt is unfortunate at this stage that we cannot give the names and the particulars because of the risks involved,” he said.

The Spokesperson was speaking on Cheche, a programme on Citizen TV where he was being questioned on reports of extra judicial killings executed by the law enforcers.

On the matter, Mr Owino admitted that there could be a few cases but he went ahead to challenge the Kenya Human Rights Commission to identify specific instances.

He however highlighted, that when using a firearm it was natural for one to panic hence officers may misuse their weapons.
