President Uhuru Kenyatta Explains Why He Blocked Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho from Attending Mtongwe Ferry Relaunch

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday explained that the move by his security guards to block Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho from attending the Mtongwe Ferry re-launch was not influenced by anger or hatred.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, the President highlighted that the event held in Mombasa a week ago did not involve Governor Joho, hence, he didn't have to be present.

According to Kenyatta, the function was purely a meeting between him and Mombasa County residents.

“Governor Joho tried to attend my function forcefully. That was my opportunity to explain to Mombasa residents what the National Government had done for them.

“His only aim was to show off to residents that he could stand before them and insult me. I could not allow that," the Head of State explained.

Uhuru added: "If the Governor wanted to speak to residents and describe what he as a Governor had done for them, then he would have waited to do that at his own given time".

During the said incident, officers from the Presidential Escort, the Flying squad and the General Service Unit were deployed to ensure Joho does not go near the Mtongwe Ferry.

Joho was put under office arrest and was only set free after the event.

The President and his deputy William Ruto had been on a four-day tour of the Coast where they launched various projects as they wooed residents to support the Jubilee Party.

The Mombasa Governor and his Kilifi counterpart Amerson Kingi claimed that the Jubilee Government was taking credit for projects that were implemented long before they came into power.

The President, however, highlighted rehabilitation and expansion of Bandari One Road and redemption of Mtongwe Ferry as some of his signature projects.
