President Uhuru Kenyatta Urges China to Transfer Skills to Locals When Undertaking Projects in Kenya

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday urged China to stop using Chinese workers when undertaking massive projects in the country but instead transfer the skills to locals.

Speaking after Kenya formally joined Beijing’s Sh15 Trillion Silk Road infrastructure initiative, President Kenyatta urged China to ensure a win-win situation for both countries.

Kenyatta stated that China should do more than just provide cash for infrastructural developments by setting up manufacturing companies and transferring skills to locals.

“It will be a win-win situation when our people have the skills, assets and financing necessary to participate in the development of the infrastructure that will support trade and reduce the cost of doing business,” noted Uhuru.

He added that China's transfer of skills in Kenya and the continent would secure jobs and lessen the burden of debt.

“This will secure the good jobs we all want, and protect us all from the burden of imprudent debt,” pointed out Uhuru.

Kenya went ahead to seek for funds, along with 67 other countries involved in the initiative, for various infrastructure projects.

Chinese President Xi Jinping touted the initiative as a game changer that would boost global development by expanding links between Asia, Africa and Europe.
