President Uhuru Kenyatta's tour of Kiambu County on Wednesday brought out the rivalry between Governor William Kabogo's supporters and those of Kabete Member of Parliament Ferdinand Waititu.
Supporters of the two gubernatorial aspirants sung praise songs and waved banners bearing messages of endorsement for either Kabogo or Waititu as the President and his deputy William Ruto addressed them.
Despite efforts by the police to control the rival groups, the exchange escalated into a shouting contest that nearly turned violent.
President Uhuru was angered by the scene and is said to have demanded the supporters put down banners promoting the two rivals.
While addressing the crowd President Kenyatta made a stern statement withrawing his support for either candidates in order to silence the crowd.
"Both Kabogo and Waititu are my good friends. However, I have decided not to endorse any of them ahead of the Jubilee nominations so you can be the ones to decide who your next governor will be. We will have tea with the one who loses, but he will have to forget about leadership," the President reiterated.
The President proceeded to address the crowd urging them to turn up and vote on election day. Kiambu County has over 1.2 Million voters but the region is plagued with voter apathy.
"I have information that some people are saying they will not vote on August 8. I appeal to you, particularly the youth, not to let me down. Support me so we can finish the work we have started," he urged.
