Two vehicles attached to President Uhuru Kenyatta's escort unit were on Thursday morning caught up in a crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) along the Meru-Nanyuki highway.
The two vehicles are said to have been heading to Marsabit County where President Kenyatta was leading a voter registration campaign.
During the crackdown, dozens of motorists including Isiolo Prison Commanding Officer Ibrahim Hassan were arrested on allegations of speeding and other traffic offences.
Hundreds of passengers who were travelling along the route were also left stranded during the early morning crackdown.
The Presidential escort vehicles were, however, later cleared and allowed to proceed to Marsabit.
Those who were nabbed in the trap complained over a lack of road signs especially those indicating the restricted speed limits.
“I was driving at 119km/hr. The government is doing well but it's unfair for them not to put speed limit and warning signs on the road,” stated one of the drivers.
The NTSA officials, on their part, insisted that their intention was not to arrest drivers and take them to court but to educate motorists.
