Education CS Fred Matiang’i has once again demonstrated his seriousness in preserving the integrity of national examinations after his ministry publicly named private schools that are using dirty tricks to get top ranking in national examinations.
The schools have been registering two examination centers where one list is for the ‘weak’ candidates while the official list is exclusively for the ‘bright’ students such that their official list used to give the school a strong mean grade.
A strong mean grade also means more parents will enroll their children in such a school and higher school fees Some of the schools managed to get a mean score of more than 400 out 500 marks which means that all their candidates will secure slots in top national schools.
Matiang’i has warned that such tactics will not be allowed and those caught doing so are risking de-registration.
“Such centers exist solely for the purpose of examination. They will not be allowed to register candidates next year unless they present all their candidates together,” stated Prof George Magoha – the Chairman at the Kenya National Examinations Council.
Among the schools that have been found to be engaging in the trick is Makini Academy, Ngong Road, Nairobi, which registered a mere 21 candidates and managed get a mean score of 419.
Makini has satellite centers scattered over Nairobi, which means the real number of candidates is higher in their other centers.

4. Lizar Junior School, Nairobi - 70 students, 404 mean score
5. Marell Academy, Bungoma - 22 students, 402 mean score
5. Chelsea Academy, Bomet - 28 students, 402 mean score
7. Fred's Academy, Imenti North - 44 students, 400 mean score
8. Al-Ansaaru Nursery and Primary, Kamukunji, Nairobi - 24 students, 400 mean score
9. Precious Hope, Kisii - 22 students, 399 mean score
10. Highrise Academy, Bureti - 16 students, 398 mean score
11. Elimu Academy, Kisii Central
12. Momokoro Academy, Kuria West
