Public Rallies in Mumias, Kakamega County Banned After Raila's Visit

Western region coordinator Mongo Chimwaga on Thursday announced that they had banned all public rallies in Mumias, Kakamega County following the raid on Booker Police Post where guns were stolen.

Making the announcement, Chimwaga stated that they were yet to recover the seven guns and over 180 rounds of ammunition stolen on November 23 and that they needed politicians to stay away from Mumias to allow smooth operations by police to trace the stolen guns.

"Let politicians stop taking politics to Mumias since we have not concluded operations. We are committed to ensuring that the guns are returned to the armoury," the western region coordinator affirmed.

In an operation aimed at recovering the guns, General Service Unit (GSU) officers are said to have attacked and brutally injured locals during the search, prompting the government to recall them following numerous complaints from both the locals and politicians.

Chimwaga's announcement comes barely a week after chaos emerged during ODM leader Raila Odinga's visit to Mumias East.

During the visit, the windscreen of a vehicle carrying Odinga was smashed after a clash erupted between two warring groups.

Odinga found himself in trouble after he tried to address residents of Mumias East but a section of Jubilee supporters led by area MP Benjamin Washiali protested the move.

The former Prime Minister had visited Shibale village where there was an ongoing meeting between leaders and residents, to discuss the police brutality witnessed in the area during the operation to recover the guns.

Odinga was, however, met with rejection after supporters of Washiali accused the CORD leader of trying to politicise the matter asking him to keep off.

The situation turned chaotic when Odinga's supporters responded with the two groups attacking each other with stones, destroying a public address system to prevent Odinga from making his speech.
