Amani National Congress (ANC) led by Musalia Mudavadi has claimed that his ODM counterpart Raila Odinga is not capable of beating President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 General Election.
In a leaked document from ANC, the team observed that an Odinga candidature would not be suitable for the National Super Alliance (NASA) having failed to win in the 2013 polls.
According to the document quoted by a local daily, Mudavadi's team admitted that the Jubilee Party had a superior voting block, therefore, using the same lineup as the 2013 one would lead an outright defeat.
According to ANC, the Opposition needed to change its strategy and focus on increasing voter turnout in NASA strongholds and raiding as many votes as possible from the Jubilee areas in order to emerge victorious in the upcoming polls.
According to Mudavadi's party, this strategy could only work in if their party leader is selected to be NASA's flag bearer.
The report titled Crunching Numbers 2017 further advocated that Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka should be Mudavadi's running mate adding that their candidature should then be supported by Odinga.
“Our computation reveals the ticket likely to achieve these goals is Mudavadi’s — backed by Raila to reduce depression of turnout in NASA strongholds — and has Kalonzo for running mate to prevent loss of 2013 advantage,” part of the report read.
ANC further claimed that an Odinga candidature would lead to voter apathy in some counties and would not be effective in capitalising on swing regions.
“Raila hasn’t much space of filling the deficit by either raiding Jubilee strongholds or turning battlegrounds into NASA strongholds,” stated the party.
