Raila Odinga Endorses Peter Munya's Re-election During Meru Tour

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday surprisingly announced his suppport for Meru Governor Peter Munya's re-election despite the county boss being affiliated to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Addressing residents during a vote-hunting mission in Meru, Odinga heaped praise on Munya stating that he was the most suited governor to run the county since he has strongly been advocating for devolution.

The Opposition Chief further stated that they were friends with the governor, adding that if elected his team would increase funds to ensure full implementation of devolution.

"Munya is a friend. We have a lot in common as far as devolution is concerned and he has been frustrated in his efforts. In this regard, we will work closely with Munya if we get to head the national government,” said the former Prime Minister.

The announcement was quite a surprise given that Munya has vowed to support President Kenyatta's re-election in the August 8 General Election.

The Meru Governor, however, has been a critic of Deputy President William Ruto.

Odinga further dismissed the notion that some areas were strongholds of a particular political faction.

“There is no Kenya of Uhuru Kenyatta or Raila Odinga or Kalonzo Musyoka or Musalia Mudavadi or Moses Wetang'ula. There is only one Kenya, the Republic of Kenya," he maintained.

Both Jubilee and NASA have been jostling to secure a grip on the Meru voting bloc ahead of the upcoming polls.

While Meru is widely perceived to be a Jubilee stronghold, political pundits have pointed at a growing revolt against the government in the area.
