Ruth Odinga Ordered to Pay Sh495,820 Fine for Damaging Businessman Rickham Muga's Car

The court has ordered Kisumu County Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga to pay some Sh495,820 to a businessman as compensation for damaging his car.

Kisumu Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Obutu directed Ms Odinga to pay off all costs accrued in the suits plus interests within a 30-day period, failure to which she would face unspecified action.

Documents filed in the court and which the Magistrate used in making the ruling, indicated that businessman Rickham Muga had incurred a cost of Sh351, 720 in repairs, Sh8,000 in towing charges, Sh5,900 in inspection charges, Sh10,000 in storage costs, Sh120,000 in alternative transport and Sh200 in police abstract fee - all totalling to Sh495,820.

Mr Obutu issued the order after finding Odinga’s driver guilty of “negligently, recklessly and carelessly driving a motor vehicle causing it to collide with that of Mr Muga that was lawfully parked along Oginga Odinga Street in Kisumu.”

In his ruling, the Magistrate indicated that the collision caused extensive damage and material loss to Muga’s motor vehicle, hence, the need for compensation.

Mr Muga had sued Ms Odinga after her vehicle collided with his in 2013 at Telecom in Kisumu causing severe damage.
