Ruto Ally Decamps Ahead of Election

A key ally to Deputy President William Ruto on Friday quit the DP’s camp to support KANU in the Kericho by-election, intensifying the rebellion against Jubilee in the region.

Speaking during the burial of Paul Maru, a slain Kenya Defence Forces officer at Chepkoiyo, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi criticised the Jubilee government for sidelining the region with regard to development.

“We voted in the Jubilee coalition expecting equal treatment like our counterparts from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s party, but it is currently not so,” he said.

Sudi complained that residents of Kericho County continued to wallow in poverty due to unfair distribution of resources, adding that Jubilee would only get support from the region if they financed and implemented projects as promised.

He assured the government that more Jubilee politicians would stop backing the coalition, because of unfulfilled pledges made by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy.

“Whether they like it or not we will support KANU in Kericho until they put our house in order,” he asserted.

The March 7 poll in Kericho will see KANU candidate Paul Sang and Jubilee’s Aaron Cheruiyot face off in a contest that threatens Ruto's South Rift influence.

DP Ruto on Wednesday apologised after he was rejected by leaders in Kericho, who accused him of offering appointments to only one family among other issues.

He went ahead to warn the leaders against causing division among the Kalenjins and pleaded with residents not to disappoint him come March 7.
