Senators Ordered to Vacate Offices at KICC

The Senators have been directed to temporarily vacate their offices situated on the 1st to the 13th floor of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

In a letter sent to the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), by the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service at the Office of the President, the legislators were directed to give in their offices for use in the coordination of the upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) conference.

A section of senators have, however, expressed their reluctance noting that the memo was hurriedly issued. The deadline for giving up the offices was September 1.

"It is not a major issue as such to support the conference, but we need to look for new offices. Some of us who do not have private offices within town will find it a challenge. Getting an office near Parliament is a challenge and will interfere a lot with our work. We have some committee rooms here," a Senator seeking anonymity said.

According to the memo reportedly seen by The Star, PSC is expected to pay each affected senator Sh100,000 every month to rent offices until February, when they are expected to take over the offices again.

A majority of senators are housed at KICC with only a few of them having offices at parliament buildings.

Kenya is expected to host the conference from 15th to 18th December 2015. This will be the first time the conference will take place on African soil.

The 10th WTO Ministerial Conference is expected to draw more than 7,000 participants, among them delegates, civil society representatives and the media.

Key sectors which stand to gain from the conference include Information, Communication and Technology, Industrialization and Enterprise development, health, Tourism among others.
