Some Kenyans living in arid and semi-arid regions will begin receiving Ksh2,700 each from the government following the latest cash disbursement under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP).

The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday, September 2, announced that the government had released Ksh294,494,400 targeting 109,072 households across eight arid counties.

According to the NDMA, the funds will be available in the beneficiaries’ accounts by Wednesday, September 3, through selected bank agents and branches.

The counties benefiting from the programme include Garissa, Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Tana River, Turkana and Wajir.

Mandera will receive the highest allocation of Ksh59.6 million to be shared among 22,102 households, followed by Marsabit at Ksh55 million for 20,388 households.

Other allocations include Wajir with Ksh51.7 million for 19,162 households, Turkana with Ksh43.5 million for 16,142 households, Garissa with Ksh24.8 million for 9,214 households, and Samburu with Ksh21.9 million for 8,115 households. Isiolo and Tana River counties will receive Ksh17.8 million and Ksh19.7 million, respectively.

The NDMA noted that each of the identified households is entitled to a monthly stipend of Ksh2,700 under the programme, which is designed to cushion vulnerable families living in arid regions from the harsh effects of drought and poverty.

Beneficiaries who encounter challenges in accessing their funds have been advised to visit the nearest bank branch to update their details to continue receiving their monthly stipends without interruption.

HSNP is implemented by the NDMA as part of the Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP), within the government’s broader Inua Jamii social protection programme.

Meanwhile, in an effort to uplift the livelihoods of residents in arid and semi-arid regions, President William Ruto on Tuesday announced that the government would embark on an infrastructure overhaul of the Maili Tisa–Kitale–Kainuk–Lokichar Road, a crucial link expected to open up the region to wider markets and opportunities.

The President further revealed that the government has allocated Ksh2.3 billion for rural electrification programmes, Ksh900 million for the construction of a modern stadium in Lodwar, and Ksh2.5 billion for the expansion of the Turkwel Irrigation Scheme, which will bring more than 100,000 acres of land under productive cultivation.

“At the same time, we are building two modern fish markets worth Ksh700 million, upgrading and equipping Lodwar County Referral Hospital, and constructing Ksh2.3 billion worth of hostels to ensure university and college students in the region have safe, dignified housing,” Ruto announced.
