Nairobi Women Representative Rachel Shebesh has revealed that talks to select a single Jubilee candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat had collapsed.
Speaking on Friday after four Jubilee candidates presented their nomination papers, Shebesh divulged that personal ambitions among the four candidates caused negotiations to fail since none of them was ready to step out of the race.
Shebesh revealed that out of five leaders who had expressed interest in the seat, only nominated Senator Johnson Sakaja accepted to shelve his ambitions while the rest remained adamant.
Those who presented their documents and were cleared to participate in the upcoming Jubilee primaries are Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Dagoretti South legislator Dennis Waweru, former MPs Peter Kenneth and Margaret Wanjiru.
Shebesh added that the hardline positions taken by the leaders who all participated in the talks meant the party was not left with any other option other than subjecting them to nominations.
She, however, stated such a situation of leaders failing to compromise for the sake of their rivals was a normal occurrence which she termed as “dynamics of politics”.
On Friday, Sonko, Wanjiru and Waweru were cleared to participate in the April nominations just a day after the same happened to Kenneth.
This is despite calls by Deputy President William Ruto for them to come to a consensus on one candidate who would take on incumbent Evans Kidero in the August General Election.
