South Africa Deploys Military To Fight Xenophobic Attacks

The South African government has deployed the army to deal with the wave of intolerant violence against immigrants in the country for the last three weeks.

The anti-immigrant attacks aimed at people from African countries outside South Africa have left more than seven people dead and around 5,000 homeless.

The army operations commence in various areas including capital Johannesburg and Durban where the police have been having a hard time trying to contain violent mobs.

Although the move comes two days after a relative calm has prevailed in the two cities, Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula insists that it is not too late.

The South African government has been under intense pressure as the international community increasingly condemns the xenophobic attacks, with countries like Malawi  holding protests.
