South Korean Leader Park Geun-hye Apologises for Scandals that Led to Her Impeachment

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has apologised for the embarrassment she had caused by carrying libido-enhancing drugs during a state visit to Nairobi where she held talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In November, Kim Sang-hee, an opposition lawmaker, revealed that the South Korean President had purchased 360 viagra pills ahead of Geun-hye’s visit to Nairobi.

The President’s office explained that the pills were not meant for sexual activities but had been purchased to assist passengers who suffer attitude sickness during long flights.

The investigation into the issue would later lead to the discovery of other corrupt practices in Geun-hye’s office that have seen her face impeachment charges.

On Monday, the South Korean leader apologised for the scandals, instead blaming her personal assistant, Choi Soon Sil.

"In retrospect, I have belated regret that I should have been more cautious with my trust in her," Geun-hye, through her lawyers, told the judges presiding over her impeachment case.

During her visit to Nairobi in July 2016, Geun-hye and Kenyatta held bilateral talks and encouraged close cooperation between the two countries.

The two leaders had also expressed their special attachment taking into account the fact that their parents, Kenya's founding president Jomo Kenyatta and the founder of South Korea's third republic, Park Chun-hee, were friends and were both elected in 1963.
