Three suspected thugs were Wednesday shot dead in Ngara area, Nairobi, with police recovering an AK47 rifle and six bullets confirmed to have been stolen from an officer last year.
After the shoot-out, officers also found a police communication gadget, a chequebook and two mobile phones believed to belong to a woman they had robbed a few minutes earlier.
Head of Special Crimes Prevention Unit Noah Katumo, confirmed the incident saying that they were informed about the planned robbery that was to be executed along Park road before a confrontation betweem the police and the gangsters broke out.
“As the officers approached the area, they heard screams from a woman who had been robbed as the gang rushed to their car where they had parked. Two others managed to run on foot,” said Katumo.
Katumo also stated that the car used by the thugs could have been stolen from a motorist on Tuesday, which was also found with three different sets of number plates.
“We suspect the number plates are used to evade police dragnets whenever they commit crimes in the city,” said Katumo.
The shooting incident attracted a crowd as people came to witness the end of the botched thugs. The bodies were moved to a mortuary within the city.
Meanwhile, police are looking for a suspect who dropped his gun while escaping arrest in Huruma estate, Nairobi. The man was in the company of three others who had been stopped by police but fled.
“One of them dropped a black polythene bag that had berretta pistol,” the police said.
