Student Whose Smart Invention Could Solve Nairobi's Traffic Problems

A computer science student student from the University of Nairobi has invented a system that maps and monitors parking lots.

Patrick Waweru, the system's inventor and creator was among hundreds of innovators showcasing their works at the university’s innovation week.

The system is designed to use sensors placed on the streets which detect if a vehicle is parked in a particular area.

Geomagnetic sensors installed underground on the streets and detect earth’s magnetic fields will be disrupted when a vehicle takes up parking space and automatically send the information to the servers.

The automated system will reduce the time drivers spend driving around the city center looking for parking spaces.

Subsequently, traffic jams will be significantly reduced.

The system, according to Waweru can easily be downloaded into a smart phone from www.multisys.co.ke by motorists who then simply search the street they want information on.

The student says he is working with the county government through the university's School of Computer, to instal the underground sensors on city center streets.

The system is set to be launched in 2016.
