Students Burn 7 Dormitories Over Football Match

Property worth millions was Saturday night destroyed after students from a school in Kisii County set seven dormitories on fire.

The learners at Itierio Boys School went on a rampage after they were denied a chance to watch a match in the ongoing Euro 2016 tournament.

Protesting against what they described as tough rules in the institution, the boys turned their anger on school property razing down 10 hostels. They then invaded the principal's office and vandalised it.

In the Saturday night chaos, the enraged learners further destroyed the institution's dining hall and the school canteen. They then moved into a neighbouring school where they damaged a laboratory and left a trail of destruction.

All this time, the students claimed that the institution had introduced strict rules that they considered too extreme for them. Police officers who were called in to quell the skirmishes were forced to fire in the air and lob teargas to disperse the irate boys.

Confirming the incident, Kisii County Commissioner Kula Hake expressed displeasure in the incident, adding that investigations had started to identify leaders of the strike.

In recent weeks, there has been a string of school demonstrations which have led to burning and destruction of property.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Wilson Sossion, attributed the wave of chaos in schools to tough regulations from the Education Ministry.
