Survivors Narrate What Happened Before Accident That Killed 20 Along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

Survivors of the grisly road accident that killed 20 people along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway have revealed details of what happened prior to the crash.

According to one of the passengers, there had been a heated confrontation between the bus driver and the conductor over how the vehicle was being driven.

The survivor, Robert Otieno, revealed that the conductor and a number of other passengers complained that bus was being driven recklessly but their calls were never heeded to by the driver.

Another passenger who escaped unhurt revealed that they had booked a Kawere bus at the Machakos bus terminus but were informed that it was full.

They were then forced to board the Super Highway Sacco, which essentially operates along the Githurai 45 route, after the management refused to refund their fares.

He further indicated that before leaving Nairobi, there had also been an argument at the terminus over who was authorised to drive the ill-fated bus.

It has also emerged that the vehicle was overloaded and had been over speeding moments before the accident occurred.

“The bus was packed to capacity, and still there were a number of conductors standing,” stated one passenger.

Upon nearing Gilgil area, the 52-seater bus which was heading to Busia tried to overtake another vehicle. It started swinging from side to side before crashing into an oncoming truck.

It was then rammed by another trailer from behind further causing more casualties.

President Uhuru Kenyatta conveyed his condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the deceased and ordered immediate investigations into the incident.
