Teachers Slapped With Another Court Order

The Industrial Court has directed teachers to comply with the order issued last Friday to suspend the strike for 90 days.

The ruling which was also made by Judge Nelson Abuodha, urged teachers to go back to class and await commencement of dialogue between the unions and the government.

“I advise KNUT and KUPPET members to respect orders of this court as they will need its protection in future,” stated Justice Abuodha

In a bid to stand their ground, teachers' unions had instructed tutors to remain on strike until the court gave further direction on Thursday but are yet to respond to the ruling.

The Friday decision had instructed the Labour Cabinet Secretary, the teachers' unions and the TSC to form a conciliatory committee within 30 days in order to find modalities of paying the tutors.

Abuodha added that if the reconciliation talks failed within the 90 days, teachers could proceed to lodge a trade dispute.

The court further warned TSC against victimizing the striking teachers and ordered for the payment of the September salaries.

It cautioned against the "Can't pay won't pay" attitude stating that it was not helpful and only served to hurt school going children.

The teachers' strike has been on for four weeks now, paralyzing learning in public schools countrywide.

Last week Government issued the closure of all schools after the tutors refused to go back to work until the money was in their bank accounts. However, the government ordered schools to reopen starting Monday next week after last Friday's court decision.
