Teen Shot During Squatter Evictions

A 15 year old boy is currently admitted in Coast Provincial Hospital, nursing injuries on his leg after he was accidentally shot in the leg as police officers tried to disperse squatters from a piece of land in Shanzu, Mombasa County.

The Nation reports that the boy identified as Ronald Baya was caught up in the commotion as protestors demonstrated to what they said was the forceful and unfair eviction of squatters.

According to The Standard, the stray bullet went through his left leg leading to a fractured tibia.

Residents claim the boy was shot by a police officer, allegations denied by the authority. Nominated senator Emma Mbura and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti Bollo condemned the incident and now want action taken against the man behind the shooting.

There has been controversy surrounding the eviction of squatters from Utange1 Settlement Scheme. The squatters took to the streets claiming that the had a court order allowing them to occupy the land.
