Tension is high in the National Super Alliance (NASA) after the Technical Committee recommended that Raila Odinga was the favourite candidate to be chosen as flag bearer.
A source privy to the matter indicated that the decision did not go down well with committee members allied to Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Wiper Democratic Movement Counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka, The Standard reports.
This forced teams allied to Kalonzo and Wetangula to walk out of a meeting on Tuesday evening leaving the future of the coalition in a limbo.
The sources disclosed to the local daily that eight members of the 12-man committee had voted in favour of Raila for presidency and Kalonzo as the running mate.
Allies of Nasa co-principal Moses Wetang’ula are believed to have recommended the Raila/Kalonzo partnership which was resisted by both Kalonzo and Mudavadi teams.
The People Daily reports that the Wiper Party, through Deputy Minority Leader Francis Nyenze, announced that they would make their final position today whether they would remain in NASA or leave, after an ultimatum for its leader, Kalonzo, to be named the coalition flag bearer, expired at midnight.
Nonetheless, on Wednesday, during in an interview with Citizen TV, Kalonzo insisted that they were yet to agree on their flagbearer, adding that all the co-principals were capable of challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He further stated that the four NASA co-principals would embark on a retreat over the weekend to deliberate on who should be the flagbearer.
Leaders affiliated to ODM and Wiper have been stirring up political waters in NASA with continuous assertions that their respective leaders - Raila and Kalonzo respectively - should be flagbearer.
The NASA co-principals have, however, been downplaying concerns of any wrangles in the coalition.
