Terrorists Launch Attack Near Mpeketoni

Armed militiamen on Wednesday reportedly attacked a lorry and a police patrol vehicle in Lamu County, opening fire on occupants.

The attack at Milihoi near Mpeketoni is reported to have left one person dead with several others injured.

Reports from other sources however, indicate that two police officers might have died in the 6pm attack.

According to the Standard, state authorities have dismissed the claims instead urged for calm as they gathered accurate information from the scene.

Confirming the incident, officer incharge of the joint task force leading operations against the insurgents in the area, James Ole Seriani, said that he was aware of some shooting but had scanty information from the ground.

"There was some shooting between Mkunumbi and Koreni and police officers have responded and the operation is still going on," the Standard quotes Ole Seriani

The terror attack is suspected to have been carried out by al Shabaab militants who have been active in Lamu, targeting civilians, police and military officers.

Following intelligence reports that al Shabaab operatives were hiding in Lamu's Boni forest, Kenya's security agencies in November launched a joint operation aimed at flushing out the insurgents from the forest.

The terror group claimed responsibility for last year's Mpeketoni massacre where about 65 christians were killed. Al Shabaab also claimed this year's June 14 attack on Kenya Defence Forces camp at Baure in Lamu, where 11 of them were killed while two soldiers also died in the dawn ambush.
