Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday, April 27, announced that the government will be taking action against drivers who cross dangerous water.

In a statement, he noted that many drivers were putting the lives of Kenyans at risk in the process.

Murkomen indicated that drivers ferrying passengers in such scenarios would be held responsible for their actions by the authorities.

Further, the CS called on motorists to exercise caution during the ongoing rainy season that has seen parts of the country marooned by floods.

"As the government works to restore destroyed infrastructure to facilitate the movement of people and goods, please avoid crossing swollen rivers. Drivers who endanger the lives of others by crossing dangerous waters will be held liable.

"I also took the opportunity to condole with families that have lost their loved ones in the ongoing rains and implored Kenyans to take their safety seriously," read the statement in part.

The CS made the remarks following the death of eight people who drowned after a lorry that was ferrying them got washed away in Makueni County.

Search and rescue efforts for eight missing people are still ongoing at the River Muatineni in Sultan Hamud.

14 people were rescued from the incident that was recorded on video on Friday, April 26.

On the other hand, the Kenya Meteorological Department has projected intensified rains for the next two days.

"As of today, the Kenya Meteorological Department has alerted the public to brace for even heavier rainfall in most parts of the country, especially in the Rift Valley, highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including the Nairobi area, Southeast Lowlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coastal region.

"Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods, and poor visibility," read a statement by the Government Spokesperson Issac Mwaura.
