Uhuru Sends Warning to NYS Scandal Suspects in Jamhuri Day Speech

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday sought to reassure Kenyans that his government was committed to ensuring that all those individuals involved in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal would eventually be brought to book.

Addressing hundreds of people who attended the 53rd Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Nyayo National Stadium, President Kenyatta urged Kenyans to take it easy and rest assured that no person involved in the scam would go scot-free.

"Please have comfort that all those involved in pilfering resources earmarked for our youth will be held to account," the Head of State said

The Head of State further pleaded with the country to differentiate between the positive impact NYS had made on thousands of young people and the scandal associated with it.

"I would like to urge Kenyans to draw a clear distinction between the positive impacts of NYS programmes and deplorable mismanagement orchestrated by individuals who were determined to railroad its success," he said.

Some of the persons adversely mentioned in the scam include powerful and well connected individuals among them Former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, Deputy President William Ruto's personal assistant Farouk Kibet and Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen who is a close ally of the DP.

Also mentioned in the scam is businessman Ben Gethi and Josephine Kabura who are believed to have been used as conduits for the siphoning of millions of funds from the NYS coffers.

Though Mr Gethi, businesswoman Kabura, former Devolution Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti, former NYS Director-General Nelson Githinji and his deputy Adan Harakhe have all been arraigned in court over the scam, the blame game over who was involved still continues.
