Uhuru Visits KDF Camp in Dhobley, Somalia

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday made a historic visit to Somalia, meeting the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Kenyatta, dressed in military fatigue, visited the soldiers at Dhobley military camp thanking them for their unending commitment and sacrifice in ensuring Somalia was peaceful.

It was the first time he was visiting the KDF troops since taking over power, in a bid to lift their morale as they continue with their engagement against the Al Shabaab militants.

The President noted that the country would forever remain indebted to the troops for their brave fight against the terrorists.

“Your being here in Somalia has saved many lives, and for that Kenyans will forever be indebted to you. Your presence here has at least freed people of the fear of Al Shabaab,” President Kenyatta stated.

The Head of State also assured the soldiers that the Government would always support and stand with them.

“We are talking to the new Somali Government to emphasise to them the importance of building their military so that you can go back home. That is our exit strategy,” Kenyatta added.

He also took time to interact with the soldiers, enquiring about the challenges they faced on a day-to-day basis.

Kenyatta was accompanied by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Samson Mwathethe who thanked him for motivating the troops.

The visit came just days after the State of the Nation address in which the Head of State paid glowing tribute to the Kenyan men and women in uniform for their commitment and dedication to secure their country.

Kenyatta has often come under criticism for failing to withdraw the Kenyan troops from Somalia even after several deadly attacks against the soldiers.
