University of Nairobi Medical Students Stage Street Demos over Doctors Strike

Medical students at the University of Nairobi on Thursday took to the street demonstrating against the ongoing doctors' strike that has paralysed the health sector for 46 days now.

In a statement, the students complained that the strike had negatively affected learning at the Varsity. The learners highlighted that the purpose of the peaceful demos was to push the Government to end the mass action.

“We would like to notify all the medical students of a demonstration on Thursday 19th January 2017. The objective of the demonstration is to protest the manner in which our learning has been adversely affected by the ongoing doctors' strike.

"Our goal will be to call out the government, through the concerned ministry, to sort out the recent stalemate with doctors so that our clinical teaching can resume,” the press release read in part.

Donned in medical practitioners' regalia the students took the streets chanting: "Without doctors, we can't learn, we want our lecturers back'.

They complained that the practical lessons are not being conducted due to the strike.

At the same time, the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) kicked off their countrywide demos to push for higher salaries.

The dons defied a court order blocking the strike, to press the government to honour a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was signed in 2015 which has not yet been implemented.
