University Registers Team Mafisi Sacco

Students of Rongo University in Migori County, have now embarked on a course that redefines the general perception of the contentious 'Team Mafisi' title.

In an effort to change the influence that the name has on character, the students formed an association dubbed 'Team Mafisi Sacco' to help tackle social issues affecting comrades in the campus.

The Sacco chairman, Jay Juma, expressed that the decision to use the infamous name was to generate interest for their activities.

“The name is sensational and attracts the attention of every student,” he said.

The new group has been registered under the Rongo University College Students Union (RUCSU) where the Dean of Students will act as the patron.

Students will now access a great many services from Team Mafisi Sacco. The group has peer counselors whose roles include offering emotional support to colleagues who have issues with their love life.

The group is also an advocate for safe sex, stocking the condom dispensers and distributing the rest to students — both male and female.

“Our team members carry condoms and issue them to students in residential halls,” said the chairman.

The college’s principal, Prof Samuel Gudu, praised the group for their initiative, adding that they can be instrumental in helping the youth deal with problems like drug abuse and sexual immorality.

“It is encouraging that students can come up with their own initiatives to solve their problems. It really makes us feel that we have responsible and dependable youth who will lead the country in future,” Prof Gudu said.
