USAID Funding Suspension Will Not Affect Health Ministry- Cleopa Mailu

The government, through the Ministry of Health, has issued a statement to clarify the move by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to cancel funding to the country.

In a statement sent to the press Tuesday afternoon, Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu stated that USAID's suspension of funding to some of the Health departments will not in any way interrupt service delivery by Afya House.

Mailu noted that the US government's support for procurement of life-saving essential commodities was not affected by the suspension, and further assured Kenyans that there would be no shortage of medical supplies despite the suspension.

"I want to assure Kenyans that stock out or non-availability of medical supplies will not be experienced," he stated

He further stated that the ministry was addressing the matter in order to find a solution as soon as possible.

"We wish to assure development partners and the people of the ministry's commitment to prudent financial management and accountability for resources placed under our stewardship," he emphasised.

On Monday, USAID issued a notice to the Kenyan Government, indicating that the US would no longer fund or offer direct assistance to the Ministry of Health.

USAID’s Kenya and East Africa Contracting Officer Brian Woody stated that the Ministry had failed to meet unspecified conditions from the US government and the agency.

"This suspension impacts all MoH departments until such a time as specific conditions have been met.

"If your organization is directly impacted by this suspension, you will receive a separate letter suspending activities and assistance to the MoH," the statement read in part.
