Video: Maseno University Closed Down, Deaths Recorded

Maseno University has been closed down indefinitely following the death of two students who were victims of a confrontation between the police and students during the varsity campaigns.

The chaos which commenced on Monday night, were sparked by the death of the first victim who allegedly jumped off a truck while attempting to run from the police.

The second death was reportedly confirmed during the Tuesday riots.

Following the institution's unrest, University Vice Chancellor Prof Catherine Muhoma, issued an order to the students to vacate the premises within 30 minutes.

“The University environment has become volatile and not conducive for learning, it will therefore be closed down with immediate effect,” read the letter in part.

According to Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany, the students had planned to steal from neighbouring shops therefore prompting them to go to the scene.

Several students were seriously injured in the riot and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kisumu.

More than 10 students were arrested in connection to the chaos and are set to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.

This comes barely a week after the University's administration offices were burnt down by unknown assailants resulting in the loss of campus financial documents.

The event was however suspected to have been caused by angry students who were barred from contesting in the elections.
