VIDEO: Teachers Snub Day 1 of Third Term

The first day of the third term saw many teachers across the country snub their work places, over the salary increment yet to be effected by the government.

Learning did not take place for most students from public schools who reported to school on Monday.

The teachers' unions - KNUT and KUPPET - had issued a Monday-midnight-ultimatum to the governmmnet, to implement the 50-60 per cent salary increment or face a nationwide strike.

Despite the threats from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) discouraging against the strike, which it termed illegal, most teachers heeded their union's call for a strike, keeping off schools.

A spot check by Citizen TV, however, showed that learning went on as usual in some schools in Nyeri and Kisumu.

The back and forth between the teachers and TSC is expected to stall learning in schools for a while longer.

The Supreme Court recently upheld the salary increment given to teachers by the Court of Appeal.

TSC, however, said it would go back to the court for a review of the orders granting the award.

The teachers' unions insisted that they would press contempt of court charges against TSC bosses for failing to effect the pay hike.
