What Pope Francis Told Kenyan Leaders

Pope Francis commenced his maiden visit to Kenya by issuing an address to Kenyan leaders at State House grounds on Wednesday.

The pope who is also the Vatican Head of State, urged leaders to uphold integrity and transparency for a better society amid a corruption crisis in the country.

“I encourage you to work with integrity and transparency for the common good of the people and foster a spirit of solidarity at every level of society,” he said.

The 78-year-old Pontiff further stated that leaders should preach respect and tolerance to avoid problems that other nations are currently facing.

While addressing the main problems troubling Kenya, Pope Francis noted that conflict emanated from poverty and corrupt leaders feeding on people’s fears.

“Experience shows that violence, conflict and terrorism feed on fear, mistrust and the despair born of poverty and frustration,” remarked the Holy Father.

The State House event where the Pope was the Chief Guest was attended by many leaders including former President Daniel Moi, who hosted Pope John Paul ii and Mwai Kibaki, the third President of Kenya.

While making his statement, President Uhuru Kenyatta welcomed the Pope into the country and crowned the event by acknowleging that he needed prayers and so did the country.

“Pray for me, that as I lead this nation, God will guide me. And as you pray for Kenya, we pray that God will hear us and indeed heal this land," he said.

Mr Kenyatta who studied in a Catholic sponsored school, also noted that the number of institutions supported by the Catholic Church had significantly grown over the years, and impacted many lives.

Pope Francis landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport minutes before 5pm to a ceremonious reception from different Catholic choirs and traditional dancers.
