Why Governor Mutua Risks Being Jailed

Machakos Governor, Dr Alfred Mutua risks serving a six-month jail term and losing his gubernatorial seat, if he fails to appear before a Senate committee as instructed.

The Committee members accused Mutua of looking down upon them by failing to honour the order to answer questions surrounding his government.

The Senators intended to grill him further over the constant squabbles between him and his deputy, Bernard Kiala, that have caused division in the County Assembly.

The Legal Affairs Committee chaired by Busia Senator Amos Wako, acted on a petition by Mr Kiala who claimed to have been mistreated by the Governor.

Despite Mr Mutua having sent representatives to answer to the allegations, the committee claimed to be unsatisfied with their arguement.

Acting County Secretary Grace Munguti told the committee on Monday, that the Governor was scheduled to travel on Tuesday evening therefore needed to prepare.

“Mutua should have sent sufficient notice to justify his absence. He should appear before the committee on November 18 or else action will be taken,” said Mr Wako.

Mr Kiala told the committee that the Governor withdrew his security and took all his official vehicles.

Last week, Governor Mutua further accused his deputy of misusing public funds and stated that futher action would be taken against him.
