Hollywood superstar Lupita Nyong'o's elder sister has lashed out at the Standard Newspaper following a publication in which she gave an exclusive interview.
According to Zawadi Nyong'o, the article published on EVE Woman on February 4, 2017, was skewed and did not reflect what she had disclosed during the interview, which she was initially sceptical on accepting.
Zawadi, who spearheaded a campaign to raise funds for Jadudi (the University of Nairobi student with brain tumor) in 2015, noted that the paper made a horrendous mistake of understating the amount they raised in the #1MillionforJadudi drive, by a whopping Sh1 Million.
The feminist noted that this was a terrible hitch owing to the fact that she was sharply attacked on social media after questions were raised of how the funds were used.
"More than Sh7 Million was raised. This information is particularly important, especially considering how seriously I take transparency and accountability with regards to the #1MillionForJadudi campaign and the cyber violence experienced around it in October 2015 and since," Zawadi said.
The Kisumu Senator's first born daughter also lamented that the Standard had used a sensational headline on twitter - Lupita's sister Zawadi talks on carving her own niche and advantages of being the superstar's sister – something that was far from what was inside the article.
She expressed her frustration on why her own identity was being lost to the identity of her family members - politician father, Anyang Nyong'o and sister Lupita - despite the fact that she loves them.
Zawadi highlighted that the paper made seven other errors including her age. She added that she had sent the corrections after the publication was out but they were never implemented.
In her blog: Digital Ubuntu Africa, Zawadi called on journalists to conduct responsible journalism at it could ruin other people's lives.
"The most frustrating thing about this all is that the next time another blogger or journalist is doing research about me, they are likely to use the wrong information presented in this article," Zawadi noted.
