President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday awarded over 500 people for their exemplary work, among them his wife Margaret Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto's wife, Rachel Ruto.
As the nation celebrated Jamhuri Day, the First Lady and DP's wife were accorded the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (second class) honours for their service to the nation.
The First lady's work, through the Beyond Zero Initiative, is lauded for saving lives and aims at reducing the infant mortality rate from the current 488 to 147 deaths per 100,000 births.
"I wish to thank the First Lady for championing the health of mothers and children through the Beyond Zero Campaign," said President Uhuru Kenyatta
Ms Kenyatta has previously been recognised and won awards for her work; some of them include the UN person of the year 2014 award, and SOMA awards 2014 for the best use of social media for charity, to sensitize people.
Similarly, Ms Ruto won the Presidential award for her continued sensitization of women under the umbrella body; Joyful Women Organisation, which for approximately five years, has been empowering Kenyan women economically.
The group provides, loans, and support for women welfare projects through Table Banking. This refers to a group funding strategy where members save and borrow immediately from their savings either on short term or long term.
Other officials who were awarded at the State House Ceremony include: Author Ngungi Wa Thiong'o, who was awarded the Elder of the order of the Burning Spear (Second Class) while visiting Liberian President Ellen Johnson was honoured with the highest award, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart.
No Governor was feted.
