Why Raila Wants Security Devolved

CORD leader Raila Odinga now wants the National Government to devolve security.

Okoa Kenya referendum initiative driven by CORD is fronting devolution of security as one of its main agendas.

Security remained as the National Government's mandate under the new constitution.

Raila Odinga noted that Governors had more knowledge on the security issues in their Counties and are therefore at a better position to handle the matter.

Odinga further pointed out that Governors ought to be made Chairpersons of the County security committees.

A section of Kenyans, however,  feel that devolving security is not the way to go.

Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning Anne Waiguru, during a devolution conference in April, noted that security challenges facing the country need a single command unit and hence devolving it would  cause confusion.

The current devolved health sector has been hit by challenges,  with health workers recurrently downing their tools. The health practitioners are currently on a weeks long strike.

Some have blamed the crisis on devolution and have called for the sector to be handed back to the National Government.

With the increasing insecurity cases in the country, the question remains will devolving security solve our problems?
