Willy Mutunga Responds After Reports on His Move to Join Boniface Mwangi's Ukweli Party

Retired Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga was on Wednesday reported on national television to be having plans of joining politics ahead of the August 8 General Election.

A report aired on Citizen TV alleged that sources had disclosed that Dr Mutunga was being fronted to lead the Ukweli Party of Activist Boniface Mwangi which was registered three weeks ago.

The report claimed that Mutunga's name had been forwarded to the registrar of political parties to replace that of Mwangi as Chairman of the party.

The registrar is however said to have declined to effect the change due to "signature hitches".

The reports of Mutunga's new move sparked excitement on social media with a number of online users okaying the former CJ's alleged political ambitions.

In a quick rejoinder, however, the former Judiciary boss dismissed the report as lies.

"Don't believe those lies!" Mutunga tweeted.

Last year, as Dr Mutunga left the Judiciary, there were calls for him to join politics and perhaps go for the Presidency. He, however, downplayed the calls noting that Kenya needed a youthful President yet he was turning 70.
