Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka Risks Losing the 1.3 Million Ukambani Votes After 23,000 Leaders Break Ranks

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka may not fulfil his promise of delivering 1.3 Million Ukambani votes to the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

This is after 23,000 leaders from the region on Saturday led the electorate in rejecting Kalonzo as the region's spokesman in favour of Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua.

The Council of Elders and political Leaders drawn from Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kwale and Taita Taveta counties endorsed Dr Mutua and crowned him as warrior and leader of the Kamba nation in a colourful ceremony at the Machakos People's Park.

Dr Mutua expressed gratitude for the high honour which was also viewed as backing for him, should he consider running for the presidency in 2022.

"It is such a huge honor but I ask my supporters to allow me time to ponder over it and I will communicate in about two weeks my decision after praying, meditating and consulting widely," read a statement he released on the matter.

Leaders who support the Wiper party leader took the endorsement as a slap in the face for Kalonzo who intends to vie for the presidency in 2022.

"The landscape in 2022 will not be as simple as the endorsement. His bid will appear to challenge Kalonzo's stab at presidency but the jury is still out on the current storm," cautioned Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.

Yatta Member of Parliament Francis Mwangangi and his Kathiani counterpart Robert Mbui rubbished the move as a panic move by the Governor after sensing defeat in defending his Machakos seat.

"Mutua has simply panicked over the huge challenge he is facing from Wavinya Ndeti because he has sensed that he will be defeated in the gubernatorial race on August 8," Mr Mwangagi implied.
