Wiper Party Officials Face Arrest After Contempt of Court Charges

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other party officials face arrest as the High Court found them culpable for defying a court directive.

The officials refused to follow an order directing them to issue a nomination certificate for the Changamwe parliamentary seat to Mr Peterson Mittau who the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal established as the primaries winner.

Mr Mittau took the party to court claiming that the officials had already unlawfully issued the certificate to his rival David Mulinge.

He called on the court to stamp its authority in the matter he described as an outright rebellion and act of corruption.

Justice Lydia Achode ruled that the Tribunal should hear and determine Mr Mittau's application on May 17.

"Court orders must always be obeyed and defiance must be dealt with in the manner prescribed by the law," the Lady Justice cautioned.

The tribunal determined a similar matter involving Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary General Nick Salat and the party's Director of elections Mr Edward Kivuvani who were fined Sh200,000 or serve a three month jail term.
