Muthama Hires 8 Senior Lawyers, Takes Plea

Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to charges of incitement to violence and disobedience of the law.

Muthama who was arraigned in court alongside Japheth Muroko, a CORD supporter facing similar charges, was represented by a team of eight lawyers and was even ready with cash if the court accepted bail.

The lawyers included; John Khaminwa, James Orengo, Harun Ndumbi, Mutula Kilonzo Junior, Edwin Sifuna, Kethi Kilonzo, Julie Soweto and Anthony Oluoch.

John Khaminwa asked Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo to release the two at generous terms saying they had the money with them.

The prosecution team objected the bail arguing that Muthama's case was similar to that of Political Analyst Mutahi Ngunyi.

Muthama is facing charges after uttering words said to have the potential to spark violence at CORD's solidarity rally in Uhuru Park, Nairobi on September 23 this year.

“From Friday next week if teachers will have not been paid nobody will go to work and whoever goes shall be stoned,” he said.

Magistrate Ogembo, however, released the CORD Senator on a Sh100,000 cash bail with the case set to be heard on February 16, 2016.

Muthama later addressed a group of his supporters, who had gathered at the Milimani Courts, saying that his case was politically instigated and that he would not becowed for defending the rights of the oppressed.
