Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has sent out a strong message of reconciliation to East African heads of state who are said to have backtracked on their promise to support Kenya's candidate in the recently held AU Commission elections.
The veteran diplomat stated that the perceived betrayal by the neighbouring heads of state including Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), John Magufuli (Tanzania), and Pierre Nkurunziza (Burundi) would not affect their diplomatic relations with Kenya.
"We have learned a great lesson. However, this is not going to affect the relationship we have with them. We need to get that right," she stated.
The Foreign affairs CS added that Kenya respected the decisions by the African heads of states and declared her support for Moussa Faki Mahamat who won the highly contested election.
Mohamed arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday to a warm reception by women leaders who organised a luncheon at the Intercontinental Hotel.
"Unluckily, matters started shifting at (the last minute) but in every election, one should be prepared to win or lose. That was a decision made by heads of state. We want a strong African Union that can make decisions in support of our economic, ICT and youth agenda among others. We have so much to do in our country and continent," she told the gathering of her close supporters.
Her message on Wednesday differed markedly from the statement she had made on Tuesday at a press conference in Addis Ababa.
Ms Mohamed had called for a probe on neighbouring countries that were reported to have abandoned their plea to support the Kenyan candidate.
Uganda has already issued a issued a statement insisting that they had fully supported the Kenyan CS up to the last minute.
Tanzania, Burundi, and Djibouti are yet to comment on the issue.
