Amina Mohamed to Help Lobby for Nairobi 2017 IAAF World Under-18 Championship

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Amina Mohamed has been given a new role just weeks after losing out on the African Union Commission Chairperson post.

Ms Mohamed was appointed to lead a delegation of government officials to lobby countries across the globe to attend 2017 IAAF World Under-18 Championship which some nations have threatened to boycott.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, the event's Local Organising Committee chairman Mwangi Muthee said that they would set up a group led by the CS Mohamed and her Sports counterpart Hassan Wario to stem the emerging rebellion towards the Championship.

“With contemporary nations who made it to Kenya plus top dignitaries, we will mobilise them for the event. We want every stone turned,” stated Muthee.

Mohamed and her team will be expected to tour various nations which have already pulled out of the event including the United States (US), Britain, Canada and Australia in order to convince them to rescind their decision.

Last week, US joined a couple of other nations in withdrawing their teams from the July games which are set to be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani over fears of a terrorist attack.

However, the government through Spokesman Eric Kiraithe dismissed such fears maintaining that the country was safe and appealed to politicians to help in selling the country rather than scaring away visitors.

He added that Kenya had hosted several high-profile guests hence there was no worry about the country's security.

“We have had bigger names visit the countries like the Pope and former US President Barrack Obama. All these people had only good things to talk about the country after they left. This is another chance to sell the Kenya,” he noted.
